Olaf Scholz – Chancellor of Germany. Member of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD). Former Vice Chancellor, former Minister of Finance of Germany.

Place of Birth. Education. Born on June 14, 1958 in Osnabrück. In 1985, Scholz graduated from the University of Hamburg as a labor law specialist.

Career. Scholz joined the SPD in 1975, when he was a student at a secondary school where he became a member of the Jusos (short for 'Young Socialists'), the youth organization of the Social Democratic Party of Germany. From 1982 to 1988, he was Deputy Federal Chairman of the Jusos, and from 1987 to 1989, he was also Vice President of the International Socialist Youth Federation.

From 1998 to 2001 and from 2002 to March 10, 2011 – he was a member of the German Bundestag.

From 2000 to 2004 and from 2009 to 2018 – Chairman of the Social Democratic Party in Hamburg.

From 2001 to 2019, Scholz was a member of the SPD Executive Board in various positions. From 2001 to 2019 – Managing Director of the party, from 2002 to 2004 – General Secretary, since 2009 to 2019 – Deputy Federal Chairman.

From May to October 2001, he was the Senator for the Interior in Hamburg.

From 2009-2011 he was Deputy Parliamentary Group Chairman of the Social Democratic Party.

On February 20, 2011, when he was Chairman of the SPD in Hamburg, he won the state elections, becoming Mayor of Hamburg. Since this city is a separate state it is, this position is equivalent to the office of Prime Minister in other German states (Bundesländer).

From February 13 to April 22, 2018 – acting Chairman of the SPD.

On March 13, 2018, he resigned as Mayor of Hamburg.

From March 14, 2018 – Deputy Chancellor and Minister of Finance of Germany.

On August 10, 2020, he was nominated as the Chancellor candidate for the 2021 Bundestag elections. At the party congress, Scholz was confirmed as the Chancellor candidate on May 9, 2021, with 96.2% of the votes cast.

On November 24 2021, three parties in Germany formed a coalition. The new government was formed by the Free Democratic Party (FDP), the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), and the Greens. Olaf Scholz, the SPD candidate, was elected as the new Chancellor of Germany on December 8.

Private Life. He has been married since 1998. His wife is Britta Ernst (born 1961), a politician of the SPD, Minister for Education, Youth, and Sports in Brandenburg. There are no children.
