The "Station Is Non-Functional": Scientist Discusses the Future of ZNPP.

The condition of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which was occupied by Russian troops in 2022, is critical. According to Kateryna Shavanova, head of R&D projects at Kernel, this power plant poses a threat to the entire planet due to the possibility of damage.
The ZNPP does not meet the basic principles of nuclear safety established by the IAEA. Shavanova stated that it is difficult to assess the level of emergency at the plant due to limited access for Ukraine.
The expert has observed two panic waves related to the ZNPP. The first arose during the beginning of the occupation when the reactors were shut down. The second wave occurred after the explosion of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station. However, Shavanova is confident that an accident at the ZNPP will not repeat, like at the Chernobyl NPP, due to the structural features of the power units.
The expert emphasizes that nuclear facilities can become targets for attacks. Therefore, it is necessary to develop protocols for staff actions in case of invasion. According to her, the station could be transformed into a museum, similar to Japan.
Shavanova also underscores that Ukraine needs to enhance communication on nuclear safety issues. She recommends making efforts to borrow Japan's experience in educational work and training specialists to combat radiation pollution.
In Shavanova's opinion, the Zaporizhzhia NPP will not be able to continue operating after returning under Ukrainian control, as the plant has not been properly maintained and repaired for the past three years. Additionally, there are mines on the territory of the plant that will require demining.
It is also noted that Russia will not agree to joint control of the ZNPP along with the USA and Ukraine.
Ukraine must make greater efforts to ensure the safety of nuclear power plants and involve communities in this process.
