American trade officials have agreed to impose significant tariffs on solar cells from Southeast Asia. This decision comes after an investigation initiated by the Korean company Hanwha Qcells, American company First Solar Inc, and other solar panel manufacturers. It is alleged that Chinese companies manufacturing in Malaysia, Cambodia, Thailand, and Vietnam are selling their products at prices below cost and receiving improper subsidies, harming American producers. The highest tariffs, at a rate of 3500%, will be applied to Cambodian manufacturers that did not cooperate with the investigation. This decision may negatively impact American manufacturers due to increased prices on imported components. The International Trade Commission will vote in June on whether the American industry has suffered damages from the importation of these products. The imposition of tariffs has already led to changes in the international solar energy trade - shipments from four countries have decreased, while shipments from Laos and Indonesia have increased.
