Syria after Assad will be the first test of Trump's foreign policy - Media.

The new US administration after the inauguration of President Donald Trump will already feel great pressure regarding the delicate diplomatic approach to Syria. The main task will be to prevent the emergence of a new state sponsor of terrorism while keeping the US at a safe distance from the conflict.
As noted by The Hill, Assad's downfall creates instability in the Middle East but also provides the opportunity to play a major role in negotiations and position itself against Iran and Russia. If Trump wishes to correct the mistakes regarding the nuclear deal with Iran, he has the chance to succeed.
For a long Time, American policy in Syria tried to balance various interests. Obama's policy of signing the nuclear deal with Iran led to a decrease in the priority of the Syrian conflict, allowing Iran and Russia to increase their influence in Syria and complicate the situation in the region. US relations with Turkey also deteriorated due to American support for the YPG/SDF fighters, who are linked to the PKK, which is a terrorist organization. These mistakes created distrust that persists to this day.
The competition for influence in the region is changing and bringing new opportunities. The war in Ukraine has significantly impacted the economy and military capabilities of Russia, weakening its ability to project power in Syria. At the same time, Iran faces growing opposition to its proxy networks, particularly Hezbollah. The Gulf countries and Turkey see a chance to shift the regional balance of power in their favor. All this gives the US the opportunity to leverage the situation to support stability without resorting to significant interventions.
