Elon Musk is investigating a leak from a Signal chat that involved top national security officials and the editor-in-chief of The Atlantic.

White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt said on Wednesday that Elon Musk is helping to lead the investigation into the leak from the Signal chat, which included top national security officials and the editor-in-chief of The Atlantic.

'The National Security Council, the White House Counsel's office, and, yes, Elon Musk's team' will conduct the investigation into the leak of information from the Signal chat,' Levitt said during the White House press conference on Wednesday.

'Elon Musk has offered to bring in his technical experts to determine how this number inadvertently made it into the chat - to take responsibility again and ensure that this never happens again,' she added.

After the publication of a piece by The Atlantic editor Jeffrey Goldberg on Monday, which recounts his addition to a Signal chat with top national security officials, including National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and CIA Director John Ratcliffe, the Trump administration faced attacks from Democrats and other critics.

Signal - an encrypted messaging program

Signal is a messaging application for sending encrypted messages, similar to making phone calls or sending messages, but with additional security measures that help ensure the privacy of communications only for those involved in the conversation.

The initial article from The Atlantic characterized the Trump administration as individuals exchanging 'war plans.' The Trump administration claims that no classified materials were passed in the chat, and the president defended Waltz in light of these revelations.

Trump reported on Tuesday that one of Waltz's office workers invited Goldberg to the chat but provided no further information.

Waltz appeared yesterday on Fox News, where he took responsibility for inadvertently adding Goldberg to the chat, arguing that he thought it belonged to someone else.

'I founded this group. My job is to make sure everything is coordinated,' Waltz said.

'Clearly, I did not see that loser in the chat. I thought it was someone else,' Waltz added. 'The person I thought was a participant was actually not in the chat.'

Waltz also stated during the interview that he had just spoken to Musk about the issue and that 'the best technical minds' would look into it.

Musk is helping to lead the Government Effectiveness Department, which investigates improper use of federal agency funds, fraud, and mismanagement.

'If this story proves anything, it is that Democrats and their propagandists in mainstream media are quite good at creating, organizing, and spreading a misinformation campaign,' Levitt continued. 'And there appears to be no one in the media who enjoys creating and spreading rumors more than Jeffrey Goldberg.'

As a result of the publication in The Atlantic about the information leak from the Signal chat, Goldberg published additional articles on Wednesday that included direct messages from the chat. In the title of the article, 'war plan' was replaced with 'attack plans.'

The Trump administration emphasized that the article mentions 'no war plans' in the correspondence, and they pointed out that the article was a 'propaganda rumor.'

'The Atlantic acknowledges that it was NOT 'war plans',' Levitt wrote on Twitter on Wednesday. 'This whole story was written by another person who hates Trump and is known for their sensationalism.'

A representative from The Atlantic defended the publication, stating that the article discussed episodes of 'military planning,' and cited TMZ for a relevant screenshot mentioning F-18 information and drones, as well as timestamps for conducting operations.

Levitt stated during the press conference that Signal is an 'approved program' for government officials, noting that 'the CIA indicated that it is installed on government phones as it is the safest and most effective way to communicate.'
