Senator Lindsey Graham's response to Trump's statements about Putin

Influential American Republican Senator Lindsey Graham reacted to President Donald Trump's recent harsh statements regarding Vladimir Putin by publishing a detailed comment on X.

The senator supported Trump's efforts to end the war but emphasized that the Russian leader is not currently demonstrating willingness for peace talks.

'I appreciate everything President @realDonaldTrump has done to try to end this terrible war. But to end any war, you must have willing partners. As of now, Putin is not willing,' Graham wrote.

The senator reminded of Putin's previous actions in Syria, comparing them to actions in Ukraine: 'Regarding Putin: we must remember that this is the man who facilitated the Assad regime in dropping barrel bombs from helicopters onto innocent civilians and deliberately attacked hospitals in Syria. Such barbaric behavior is happening in Ukraine.'

Graham also directly addressed the Russian people, warning about the consequences of Putin's policies: 'To the Russian people: Putin is leading you into a abyss.'

The senator provided specific figures regarding Russian losses:

  • Tens of thousands of Russian soldiers killed and wounded
  • Economy smaller than Italy's under increased pressure
  • Russia more isolated than ever

'This does not make Russia great. It makes it a pariah state. You, the Russian people and military, can do better,' Graham concluded.

The senator's comments came after a series of sharp statements from Trump regarding Putin on May 26-27. Initially, the American president called the Russian leader 'absolutely insane' and the next day threatened 'very bad things' for Russia, stating that Putin 'is playing with fire.'
