'For the media who asked: I just contacted the U.S. State Department, and we confirmed that Tami Bruce's comment regarding the U.S. role as mediator came in the context of her similar earlier statement this week: 'If there is no progress, we will step back as mediators of the process.' This is not a new position but one that has been previously expressed by the U.S. Secretary of State,' – Tykhyi stated in his official message.
It should be noted that earlier during a briefing, State Department spokesperson Tami Bruce stated about the change in Washington's approach to participation in the peaceful resolution of the conflict. According to her, the U.S. will no longer act as a mediator in the negotiations, and the initiative must directly move to Kyiv and Moscow.
'We certainly will continue to help and do everything we can, but we will no longer fly around the world at the first call to be mediators at meetings. Now this is a matter for the two parties,' – Bruce emphasized at that Time.
The State Department representative also emphasized that despite the change in approach, the U.S. would not lift any sanctions currently in effect against Russia. According to her, President Donald Trump is not stepping away from obligations regarding the peaceful resolution of the conflict, but believes that 'there is another part of the world, a whole globe, that needs certain attention.'
Secretary of State Marco Rubio also confirmed the new position of the U.S., noting that the American side would act differently in the process of resolving the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.
The statement from the spokesperson of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry appeared against the backdrop of active media discussions about the change in U.S. mediation policy and its potential impact on the negotiation process.
